Safety

Never look directly at the Sun. Never through binoculars, a telescope, or a camera. There is no safe stare at the Sun without certified solar filters designed for that purpose.

  • The Star You Saw This Morning

    1. Stand where you can see a shadow on the ground.
    2. Notice how sharp it is. That sharp edge is made by a very bright, very distant-looking disk.
    3. Come back later and see if the shadow has moved. The ground did not spin the shadow. Earth turned.

  • Why Stars Wink

    1. Find a bright point in the sky.
    2. Watch it for thirty seconds. Does it wink?
    3. Find another bright point that holds still. That calmer light may be a planet.
    4. If you can, compare a star high overhead with a star low near the horizon. The lower one often winks more. You are looking through more air.

  • The Moon Is Falling

    1. Find the Moon if it is up. Notice its shape tonight. Draw it.
    2. Look again tomorrow, around the same time. It will have moved and perhaps changed shape.
    3. You are not watching a sticker on the sky. You are watching a falling world.

  • The Little Points That Moved

    1. If Jupiter is up, it will be one of the brightest, steadiest lights in the sky.
    2. Binoculars held still, braced on a wall, can show the little points.
    3. Look again an hour later, or tomorrow. If the points have moved, you have seen what Galileo saw.

  • How Old Is This Light?

    1. If the Moon is up, blink once, slowly. That is roughly how old its light is.
    2. Pick a star. You cannot feel its delay. You can remember that the spark left home long before it reached you.

  • The Star That Points North

    1. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, find the Big Dipper. Follow the two stars at the end of the bowl. They point toward Polaris.
    2. Once you have it, you have north.
    3. If you are in the south, look instead for the Southern Cross and the pointers your local sky watchers use. Wonder Atlas will not pretend Polaris is universal.

    1. Find one bright star just as it comes up, if you can, or watch one that is already up.
    2. Notice the place on the horizon, or the direction from where you stand.
    3. That rising place is a direction. You do not have to name the star. You do not have to cross an ocean. You only have to notice.

    1. Find a bright star. Let your eyes rest on it. Does it lean gold, or white, or blue?
    2. Compare two stars. The difference is easier to see when they sit in the same glance.
    3. If Orion is up, compare the shoulder (Betelgeuse, orange) with the foot (Rigel, blue-white).

    1. Find a star you can hold with your eyes.
    2. Notice if it leans gold, or white, or blue. That is heat writing itself. It is not the recipe yet.
    3. You will not see hydrogen. The plates came later. Color is the first hint the sky will give you.

    1. When Saturn is up, it is a steady cream-gold point.
    2. A small telescope shows the rings as a line, then as an oval.
    3. Even without a telescope, you are looking at a world with a disk of ice around it.

    1. Go outside. Look at one star for thirty seconds.
    2. That star may have planets. You cannot see them. You can know they are possible.
    3. The question can sit with you. It does not have to be answered before bed.

  • The Tiny Shift

    1. Hold your thumb at arm's length against something far: a tree, a lamp, a wall.
    2. Close one eye. Then the other. Watch the jump.
    3. Now look at a bright star. You will not see its jump. It is real, and much smaller than your thumb.
    4. If you are under a dark northern summer sky, the Swan is overhead. 61 Cygni is a faint orange pair. City light will hide it. The thumb still works.

    1. Go outside. If you can, let your eyes rest away from bright lamps for a few minutes.
    2. Look up. Notice whether the sky looks milky or black.
    3. Find the brightest point you can. That is enough.
    4. If you see only a few, they still count. If you see many, they still count. This is not a contest.

  • A Sister in a Little Dipper

    1. When the Pleiades are in your evening sky, look for a tiny huddle, like a little dipper.
    2. Do not hunt for seven. Count what you can see. That is the night you have.
    3. If you have binoculars, look again. More sisters pour out. Still not a contest.
    4. You will not see Merope's veil with your eyes. The huddle is the thing to find.
